If you have an older laptop, replacing a mechanical drive with an SSD upgrade can add a several years to its useful life. The drive includes a 5 year/500TBW (terabytes written) warranty. This was a painless & FAST upgrade!ĭid I mention fast? Wow! The system cold boots in about 15 seconds (used to be about 1:20), programs open virtually instantly, & oh my goodness does this puppy rock! This is a 2011 Core i7 Quad-core system so it performed admirably save in the drive speed department, but the difference in performance with the new SSD is AMAZING! It is literally like getting a new computer.

I booted up the new drive, Windows 7 detected & installed the drivers, another reboot & I was finished. The True Image drive cloning completed in about 45 minutes while the physical changing of the drives required another 20 minutes. Accessing the internals of the Series 7 required removing the screws securing the bottom cover, removal of the drive mechanism, transferring the new drive to the drive cage, then reassembling in reverse order. I used Acronis True Image to partition & clone the original drive, then swapped over the drives.

In preparation I used a USB 3.0-to-SATA adapter purchased here at Amazon for $7. I replaced the original Seagate 1TB 5400RPM drive with this Western Digital WDS200T2B90A 2TB SSD drive. With SSD prices now reasonable I decided it was time to give my 2011 Samsung Series 7 Chronos NP700Z5C laptop an upgrade. It is just amazing and well worth the frustration of cloning, just don't make the same mistake I made, don't use Acronis, use Macrium Reflect. I bought an extra device just for my virtual memory and backups. My 8 year old computer performs like a one week old super computer now. While I'm working on 3D models a no longer have to bear the sound of my HDD thrashing around violently. I do a lot of work in 3D and I can easily load a 1 million polygon file in 12 seconds. Applications load like they've never been closed. Windows doesn't just load anymore, it blasts on the screen with nerve shattering speed. This ssd drive is like having 1TB of RAM. Acronis made me go through the whole setup, again and again and again.

It didn't even pick the task up when I tried to isolate causes and run the clone again, but Macrium did. Acronis pretended to be cloning, but never completed a single task and then just terminated with no messages, or reasons why. In one hour, Macrium Reflect informed me that I had some corrupted files that needed to be fixed and gave me the command line prompt to fix them. I tried for 2 days using Acronis to isolate the cause of my cloning failures, following all the known issues on various logs including the WD site.

I'm always suspicious of software on foreign sites, but Macrium came recommended by CNET and the 30 trail allows you to clone. There is free software out there to do a better job, I used Macrium Reflect, and now I've decided to purchase it because it does a much better job at backups than MS Win backups do and it is safe to use. So, let me save you some time and trouble on that part - don't go to the wd site and download Acronis.

First let me begin with the one and only negative thing about the WD Blue 3D NAND 1TB PC SSD - SATA III Western Digital's site only provides Acronis True image for cloning your existing drive, and it is a trimmed down version that has no error messages or logs, and doesn't really scan your original HDD to report any corrupted files. I'd have given it 5 starts if I were basing my evaluation strictly on the performance of the product, but there are other things to factor in and they don't allow people to give 9/10ths of a star, which is what the star ranking for the product really is (to me).
